Respite for the Caregiver
Respite is designed to give caregivers a temporary break from caregiving. Respite care can include in-home respite providers, adult day centers, and brief nursing home stays.
Let’s say that you would like to go out of town to attend a wedding and you cannot leave your loved one alone. With in-home respite, you can have someone come into your home to be with your loved one, do some light housework, remind them to take meds, and assist them with personal care.
Maybe you just need some time to yourself for a few days to tend to personal cares. Respite allows you to have your loved one attend an Adult Day Services Center during the daytime. Adult Day Services offers a wide range of social activities, as well as counseling and physical therapy in some centers.
Or, perhaps you need surgery and you will be in the hospital for a few days. There is no one to care for your loved one at home. With respite, you may have your loved one cared for in a nursing home for those few days.
There are no income qualifications for this service, but it is necessary for a care coordinator to authorize respite care. Respite funds are limited.
