          WIAAA: FirstStop for Seniors

Approximately 200 aging network professionals and 20 seniors attended Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging's Annual Conference held September 14, 2006 at The Mark of the Quad Cities.

The conference opened with a welcome from Barbara Eskildsen, Assistant Director of Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

The opening speaker was Dr. Sara Sanders, Assistant Professor of the University of Iowa's School of Social Work.  Dr. Sanders presented on "Finding the Silver Lining in Caregiving".  Her presentation examined the types of personal growth and development that caregivers can encounter.  The goal was to help professionals assist caregivers in locating the "silver Lining". .

Participants could choose from 12 breakout sessions on a variety of topics such as "Normal and Abnormal Aging", Effective Coordination for Disaster Planning, Environmental safety, Domestic Violence and Fundraising.  The Mark was filled with a variety of displays from different vendors that participants could enjoy over breaks.

We would like to thank our sponsors for making this event possible.  Major funding was provided by AT&T, the Moline Dispatch, The Rock Island Argus and The Leader.  Additional funding was provided by Addus Healthcare, Fort Armstrong, Friendship Manor, Help at Home and Home Instead Senior Care.  And a special thank you to the presenters for sharing their time and knowledge with us.

Please join us next year for our 2007 Annual Conference to be held at The Mark of the Quad Cities on Thursday, September 13, 2007.
